Look Development

Here is how the work lines up. Look development happens before the first day of principal photography and sets the visual target each camera, lens, lighting, and wardrobe decision will be measured against. For shoots in New York, that means testing against the exact palettes the city actually delivers on the day: the steel-and-glass coolness of Hudson Yards and Midtown East, the warm brick and brownstone of Park Slope and the West Village, the sodium-and-neon mix of a Times Square or Lower East Side night exterior, the cold dawn light off the East River, the saturated subway-platform fluorescents, the dust-and-sun haze of a summer Coney Island shoot.

Here is the layout. Our team runs camera and lens tests with the DP at Light Iron NY, Harbor Picture Company, or PostWorks New York, builds many look candidates on representative footage, and refines the chosen direction with the director until the brief is locked.

Here is how the work shapes up. The deliverable is more than a single LUT: it is a full style guide covering on-set tracking LUTs for the DIT cart and director's monitor, a dailies LUT for the post pipeline running through PostWorks, Technicolor PostWorks NY, or Goldcrest Soho, a base CDL the final-grade colorist starts from, and written records of the creative intent behind each decision.

Here is how it adds up. That package travels with the production from pre-pro through wrap, keeping the DP, on-set DIT, dailies colorist, and the eventual final-grade colorist — often someone from the East-Coast roster of Tom Poole, Sofie Borup, Sam Daley, or Joe Gawler — aligned on the same target. References can be drawn from the NYC-shot canon Bradford Young, Andrij Parekh, Adam Newport-Berra, or Sean Bobbitt have built, from Tribeca or NY Film Festival programming, from photography or first concept art — but the deliverable is always a unique look built around the exact story and footage, never a derivative copy.
