Long-term media preservation for New York productions

Archival preservation sits at the end of the post pipeline. Yet it is the step that decides whether a production stays open and valuable a decade from now. New York is rare in carrying both the densest cluster of commercial work in the US and a deep preservation culture. The NY Public Library Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, the Schomburg Center in Harlem, the Paley Center for Media in Midtown, and the MoMA Film Department all keep active moving-image archives. The standards they set shape how the commercial post houses handle long-term storage.

Our team sets up preservation masters at PostWorks New York, Technicolor PostWorks NY, Light Iron NY, and Goldcrest Post Production. LTO-9 and LTFS pipelines run next to cloud cold-storage tiers at AWS Glacier or Azure Archive. As a result, each production ships with both an offline tape master and a backup digital copy held in a separate place.

Some features are bound for re-release, anniversary screenings, or new market deals. Others are episodic series that move between licensing windows on HBO, Netflix, Apple TV+, or Amazon Studios. For this work, we keep preservation masters at full bit depth in ProRes 4444 XQ or uncompressed DPX, plus the finished IMF and DCP packages.

Metadata is captured against MovieLabs and AMPAS ACES schemas. Checksums are run at ingest and on a regular integrity-check schedule. Format-migration plans are mapped against LTO generation support, so content stays readable as the tape standard moves from LTO-9 toward LTO-10 and beyond. Productions tied to NYS Film Tax Credit deliverables also get a records package fit for Empire State Development audit trails. Master elements bound for archival preservation can also be prepared to the specs that institutions accept. The NYPL Performing Arts, MoMA, and Museum of the Moving Image each take such elements for permanent collection ingest.

      FAQ

      Frequently Asked Questions

      What is LTO tape archiving?

LTO (Linear Tape-Open) is the industry standard for long-term media archiving. LTO tapes offer top lifespan (30+ years), high capacity, and low cost per terabyte. We use LTFS (Linear Tape File System), which makes tapes as easy to use as hard drives. You also gain the safety of offline storage.

How do you ensure data integrity over time?

We use many safeguards. These include checksum checks at each stage, backup copies stored in different places, site-level tracking of storage sites, and regular integrity checks. Our systems flag any issues on their own, so we can fix them before data loss occurs.

What happens when formats become obsolete?

We watch format lifecycles and plan moves before a format goes obsolete. Our plan keeps access to legacy playback systems and shifts content to today's formats when the time is right. That way, your content stays easy to reach no matter how technology changes.

Can you help organize and catalog existing archives?

Yes. We offer full digital asset management services. This work includes cataloging old archives, building searchable metadata databases, and setting up MAM systems. Our team can turn messy media libraries into clean, easy-to-reach archives with full search tools.

Productions in New York that need this often pair it with Broadcast Delivery Services, Digital Cinema Package (DCP), and Format Conversion & Encoding Services for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Delivery & Output Services and Audio Mixing & Mastering.
