A Director of Photography shapes how a production looks through choices about lighting, camera moves, lens picks, and framing. New York City is the birthplace of American independent cinema and home to Steiner Studios and Silvercup Studios. Its look owes much to legendary DPs like Gordon Willis ASC and Bradford Young ASC, whose urban camerawork defined modern filmmaking.

We connect you with skilled Directors of Photography who grasp both the creative and the practical sides of your shoot. Whether you film at Steiner Studios in Brooklyn Navy Yard or on location in Midtown Manhattan, our team pairs your project with DPs who bring the right eye, plus gear sourced through rental houses like TCS and Adorama Rental Co.

NYC Directors of Photography from Local 600 East to feature DPs

New York's Director of Photography community sits where the birthplace of independent cinema meets the modern American auteur. That line runs from Gordon Willis ASC's interiors on The Godfather and Manhattan, through Sven Nykvist's Woody Allen years, into the working ranks our network draws on each week.

That roster runs deep. Bradford Young ASC brings the rich, character-driven palettes that defined Selma and Arrival. Sean Bobbitt BSC ASC carries the long-take Steve McQueen tradition. Robert Elswit ASC, Phedon Papamichael ASC, and Maryse Alberti cover feature documentary and drama. Andrij Parekh, Adam Newport-Berra, Tobias Datum, Christopher Norr, and Mark Schwartzbard shoot HBO, Apple TV+, A24, and Netflix New York drama. Reed Morano ASC, Rachel Morrison ASC, Robbie Ryan ISC BSC, and Daniel Landin BSC work on New York-anchored features.

All of them work inside IATSE Local 600 East Coast, the Global Cinematographers Guild chapter that governs cinematographer, camera op, focus puller, and DIT contracts across the Tri-State. New cinematographers coming up through Tisch, Columbia, SVA, and AFI New York round out a roster of more than 150 vetted DPs. The roster covers Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Hudson Valley, and out to Long Island.

Engagements start with a creative brief, reference deck, and budget range, then narrow to a curated shortlist of showreels and direct talks before booking. Our DPs are fluent across ARRI Alexa 35, Alexa Mini LF, RED V-Raptor and Komodo, and Sony Venice 2 bodies, all sourced through TCS, AbelCine, Panavision New York, ARRI Rental NY, and Adorama Rental Co. Most also keep standing ties with the Local 600 1st AC, focus puller, and DIT, plus the Local 52 gaffer and key grip teams they like to bring with them.

Pre-production brings shot lists, lighting plans, lens tests, and tech scouts across Steiner Studios at Brooklyn Navy Yard, Silvercup Queens, Kaufman Astoria, York Studios Bronx, JC Studios Brooklyn, and Broadway Stages, plus exterior work across Manhattan, the boroughs, Hudson Valley, and the Hamptons. We prepare NYS Film Tax Credit forms at 30% with the 10% NYC uplift, alongside MOME Made in NY film permits, NYPD Movie & TV Unit planning, and FDNY film safety officers wherever the location calls for them. Global shoots can either pair a New York DP with a travelling director or place a New York cinematographer on a foreign shoot under one Local 600 contract.

FAQ

Our DP Network

What experience levels of DPs do you provide?

We give DPs at every experience level. New cinematographers suit indie and low-budget projects, mid-level DPs bring solid commercial and documentary credits, and senior DPs carry feature film and global broadcast work. We then match that experience to your budget and project needs.

How do you match DPs to projects?

We review your creative brief, reference materials, and budget, then shortlist DPs with the right genre experience and visual fit. You get curated showreels and can ask for direct talks with candidates before booking.

What camera systems do your DPs work with?

Our DPs are skilled across all major cinema camera systems, including ARRI Alexa, RED, Sony Venice, Blackmagic, and Canon cinema lines. Many focus on certain systems, yet all adapt to your production needs and what rental stock is available.

Do DPs come with their own equipment?

Some owner-operator DPs bring their own camera packages, while others work with rented gear. We arrange gear sourcing to match your preference and budget, whether through DP-owned kit, rental houses, or gear the production supplies.

Can you provide international DPs for shoots in New York?

Yes. We can source global DPs for shoots in New York and handle the work permits and logistics. We also send New York DPs to global shoots that need local camera talent abroad.

What's included in DP day rates?

Standard DP day rates cover on-set camera work during production hours. Pre-production work like tech scouts, shot listing, and meetings is mostly billed apart. Gear, camera assistants, and late hours cost extra based on the scope of your project.

Productions in New York that need this often pair it with Steadicam & Gimbal Operators, Drone Videography, and Underwater Camera Operators for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Virtual Production and Production Services.
