SCENE 01 / STEADICAM GIMBAL OPERATION

Steadicam & Gimbal Services

Professional stabilized camera operation for smooth, dynamic shots across New York.

Scroll

Steadicam and gimbal systems give smooth, stabilized camera movement that follows the action through busy spaces. Whether you track the crowds of Times Square or work Brooklyn's warehouse floors, these tools cut out shake and vibration. That lets operators pull off fluid tracking shots, walk-and-talks, and complex set-piece moves with cinematic precision.

We connect you with skilled Steadicam and gimbal operators who bring both tech skill and creative instinct to your shoot. Our team works with New York rental houses such as AbelCine and TCS (The Camera Division at Panavision). They set up the right stabilization platform for your camera package and shooting needs, so it slots cleanly into your camera department.

NYC Steadicam and gimbal operators from SOC East to Local 600

Stabilised camera work in New York is shaped by the city's non-stop run of prestige drama, indie features, half-hour comedy, late-night live, and brand commercials. Those shooting days flow out of Steiner Studios in Brooklyn Navy Yard, Silvercup Queens, Kaufman Astoria, York Studios Bronx, JC Studios Brooklyn, and Broadway Stages all year. Our roster spans the SOC East Coast chapter, with owner-op Steadicam talent on Tiffen and PRO sleds. They built those careers on Severance, Mrs. Maisel, The Deuce, Boardwalk Empire, Succession, and Stranger Things New York blocks.

Alongside them sit Local 600 East Coast camera ops running DJI Ronin 2, Freefly MoVI Pro XL, and ARRI Trinity hybrid rigs, drawn from Tisch, Columbia, and SVA-trained backgrounds. Many have built their reels on the long-take work that defines HBO, Netflix, Apple TV+, and Amazon New York drama. The same bench also feeds the Adam McKay and Noah Baumbach features that lean often on East Coast ops. Camera packages route through TCS, AbelCine, Panavision New York, ARRI Rental NY, and Adorama Rental Co. ARRI Alexa 35, Alexa Mini LF, RED V-Raptor, and Sony Venice 2 bodies are prepped and balanced before call.

A production may brief a one-take Washington Square Park walk-and-talk, a Steiner sound-stage corridor reveal, or a Brooklyn DUMBO follow with practicals. Others call for a Wall Street rush-hour run-and-gun, a Times Square crowd push under MOME film permit, a Coney Island boardwalk sequence, or a Madison Avenue fashion follow. Each one gets op picks matched to camera weight, lens choice, vest type, and shot length rather than a generic day rate.

Our coordinators set up rehearsal blocks and blocking sessions for complex choreography. They plan car-to-ground transfers with Chapman/Leonard Russian Arm and Hydroscope camera cars and process trailers. The crew also blends Steadicam with crane, Technocrane, cable cam, ARRI Trinity hybrid moves, or car process work when the script calls for it.

Gear is insured to NYC industry standards through dedicated production cover. NYPD Movie & TV Unit and FDNY film safety officer planning is built into the call sheet. Our crews know the Local 600 communications, Preston follow-focus, and monitor chains used by East Coast DPs. They move easily between drama, feature, music video, and commercial sets. NYS Film Tax Credit forms at 30%-plus-10% NYC uplift are prepared under one lined-up camera-department contract wherever the production qualifies.

FAQ

Our Equipment & Expertise

When should I choose Steadicam versus gimbal stabilization?

Steadicam shines on long takes, heavy cinema cameras, and smooth organic movement. Gimbals give more mobility for run-and-gun work, lighter setups, and dynamic low-angle shots. Many shoots use both, chosen by what each shot needs.

What camera systems can your operators support?

Our operators run all major cinema cameras on Steadicam rigs, including ARRI Alexa, RED, Sony Venice, and Blackmagic. Gimbal operators handle these plus lighter systems such as the Canon C300, Sony FX6, and mirrorless cameras.

How much rehearsal time is needed for complex Steadicam shots?

Complex choreographed shots usually need 1-2 hours of on-set rehearsal. For big one-take sequences, we suggest a full or half rehearsal day before the shoot itself.

Do operators bring their own equipment?

Most of our Steadicam operators are owner-operators with their own rigs. Gimbal gear can be operator-owned or rented on its own. We set up the gear sourcing around your production's needs and budget.

Can you combine Steadicam with other camera movement?

Yes. We often shoot moves that pair Steadicam or gimbal with dollies, cranes, cars, and cable cam systems. Complex sequences need extra planning and rehearsal.

What are typical day rates for Steadicam operators?

Day rates vary with the operator's experience, the gear involved, and the production type. Each rate covers the operator and their stabilization rig, while camera, lenses, and accessories are usually billed apart. Contact us for a quote tailored to your shoot.

Productions in New York that need this often pair it with Director of Photography Services, Multi-Camera Shoots, and Drone Videography for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Virtual Production and Gaffer & Lighting Services.
